Master of transformation Kathryn Hunter will bring to life an extraordinary fable of corruption, avarice and the collapse of absolute power in this Polish tale of dishonesty, greed and attrition, based on the astonishing book by legendary journalist Ryszard Kapu?ci?ski. For this project - the first coproduction between the Théâtres de la Ville and vibrant London theatre Young Vic - she will be reunited with writer Colin Teevan and director Walter Meierjohann ( Kafka's Monkey ). Hunter promises to create a mesmerizing cast of characters, all servants to a despotic ruler on the brink of downfall. In a kingdom obsessed with title and tradition, the lowly and the loyal have incredible stories to tell.

Not one to be limited by gender casting, award winning Kathryn Hunter has built a career on her remarkable ability to transform. Tiny in stature, with limbs like elastic and a malleable, throaty voice, she has broken boundaries playing male parts including King Lear, Richard III and most recently Cyrano de Bergerac. She's an innovator in physical theatre, has worked extensively with Complicite and director Peter Brook and has impressed with Peter Brook's The Valley of Astonishment.
