JANOSIK BY BASHAVEL (CINEAST)
CinEast (Central and Eastern European Film Festival in Luxembourg)
JANOSIK (directed by Jaroslav Siakel, Czechoslovakia 1921) with live musical accompaniment by BASHAVEL (SK)
Bashavel, a five-member group of outstanding jazz musicians from Slovakia, will perform a live soundtrack to the silent film Janosik by Jaroslav Siakel (1921), the well-known story of the legendary popular hero Janosik, a highwayman who 'stole from the rich and gave to the poor'. The band's unmistakable sound is an original blend of traditional folk motifs with modern jazz. Bashavel have performed the soundtrack on many occasions in various countries, and this is their first ever performance in Luxembourg.
Janosik is a black-and-white silent film from 1921, which placed Slovak filmmaking as the 10th national cinema in the world to produce a full-length feature movie. Juraj Janosik, a young student, returns to his village and becomes the leader of highwaymen, robbing the rich to give to the poor, after a local warlord murders his parents. The story of this Slovak 'Robin Hood', well-known not only in Slovakia and Poland, but also in neighbouring countries, has been the subject of many writings, plays and film adaptations, this 1921 version being the first.
The Slovak band BASHAVEL was formed in the spring of 2006. It is a joint project of musicians who formerly cooperated in different jazz groups. Through their musical utterance, they want to link up with the traditions of folk music. Dulcimer, piano, drums, double bass and violin create manifold moods, colours and rhythms out of folk songs and tunes. Therefore the music that Bashavel performs reaches the scope of various genres.
Marcel Comendant - Dulcimer
Stanislav Palúch - Violin
Klaudius Ková? - Piano
Róbert Ragan - Bass

The ciné-concert will be followed by a special jam session at the Brasserie Le Neumunster (free).
